Getting Your Perfect Tent

We all love camping, there’s nothing like being outdoors and taking in the fresh air that surrounds us. It’s no wonder that camping has increased in popularity so rapidly since the recession hit in early 2008. People are going back to the UK holiday, packing their bags and getting off on a great trip for little or no money. There’s only one thing that you need before get along to a great holiday, and that’s a great tent!
The first thing to consider when buying a tent is simple -is it going to be a long term relationship, or is it simply for a one off trip? THere’s been a strange shift recently - people have been going towards a line of thought that says that tents should be throw away, that they should be cheap, cheerful, and “once only”. Personally I think this mindset is part of the tragedy of our age, a mindset that considers nothing valuable and everything as waste.
If I were to buy a tent today, I would try and steer clear of the cheapest offers from the internet or large supermarkets. I’d be looking long and hard for the best possible deal on a high quality tent! The real question that you need to consider is simple, how large do you want to go? Tents 6 man in size might be a bit large for most, but actually they’re great investments. They give you that all important additional space and headroom for longer stay trips!
People really don’t like to carry large tents, and I can see why, so 6 man tents are probably best for trips involving the car and a short walk to a stationary camp site. If you’re being more adventurous, you might want to consider small 2 man or 4 man coleman tents. They are fantastic quality, and an even more fantastic price.
All things said, it’s well worth spending as much as possible on your tent. And go for large!
What You Need to Survive Outdoors

I’ve always been a keen camper, but I’m nowhere near as tough as Bear Grylls or Ray Mears. I’m only ever interested in fair weather camping.
But some of my hardier mates were discussing the minimum needed to survive a few nights outdoors at this chilly time of year.
We concluded that the bare essentials would consist of shelter, somewhere warm to sleep and the means to create fire and find food and water. So the outcome of the beer fuelled conversation has been the challenge for us to spend two days and nights surviving and sleeping outdoors.
We will take some tents, a cosy and warm sleeping bag each, a knife and some water, as well as warm clothes and stout footwear. This is all the camping gear that we’ll be taking.
We’re not allowing ourselves to take a lighter or matches, which will make it tough to start a fire and we will not be taking any food. So we’ll be trying to snare a rabbit or two, or maybe scraping some road-kill for a road-kill cook off.
This reminds me of a similar challenge that I undertook way back when I was a boy scout. On that occasion we were allowed to take a little food, but no shelter and no means of starting a fire. We started a fire using the friction method and built bivouacs using branches, leaves and straw. I remember that this was a lot of fun, but hard work.
The most useful thing that each of us took with us that time was our knives. You may have noticed how this is the key survival essential that Bear Grylls always has with him when he parachutes into a wilderness somewhere. Armed with a good quality knife you’re able to cut wood for fire or a shelter. You can skin and prepare a rabbit for cooking and make the snare needed to trap the rabbit in the first place.
So I hope that you will wish me luck on my forthcoming survival challenge weekend. But I shall definitely be taking my mobile phone so if we don’t have any luck with rabbits or road kill I’ll be able to call for a pizza!
When Buying A Tent You Should Consider The Hydrostatic Head And The Sun Protection Factor
Posted by admin
META: There are certain aspects that we must consider when buying a tents for camping. Purchasing a tent sounds relatively simple but there are factors that need considering beforehand. Two of the most important factors are the sun protection factor and the hydrostatic head.
Tents are available in various kinds of material that are suitable for different weather conditions. Fabrics can include cotton canvas, nylon, polyester and felt. Canvas can absorb water but it can also become very bulky once it takes in all the water. The nylon and polyester types do not take in much water and are therefore lightweight, they can also be completely waterproof if the right kind of coating has been used on them. The fabrics over the years will tend to wear as they are exposed to constant harsh UV rays. Each tent, therefore needs to be tested to see how much resistance it will take against natural conditions such as the sunlight and rain.
On nylon and polyester tents the common coating used is polyurethane. The coatings are available with different resistance power and the strength of this resistance is generally measured in Hydrostatic Head. The coating and durability of the tent will last longer if the Hydrostatic Head is greater. Rain is calculated in milimetres and indicates the resistance of the force of the water that is required to enter the fabric. A light shower will not harm your tent but a heavy down pour will put more pressure on the tent.
If a fabric indicates a hydrostatic head of 1000mm, it can be classified as good enough for a light shower. A hydrostatic head of 1500mm in a tent fabric is appropriate for summer camps while 2000mm fabrics are durable for more weather types like 4 season tents. Flysheets and groundsheets vary in size but you will find a flysheet will be at least 5000mm, so it is safe to assume that the groundsheet will be much bigger than this. A tent fabric with a hydrostatic head of 3000mm can be used for expeditions.
The other aspect that we must take into consideration while selecting a good quality tent is the sun protection factor. The ultraviolet rays of the sun are very harmful to use it is therefore very important to check the sun protection factor or SPF. This will show you how long you can expose yourself for. You will have more protection from the sun if you choose an SPF with a large number. Not only are tent fabrics checked for water resistance, they are also marked for the UV protection; this is usually between SPF35 and SPF50. You can find tents with much higher SPF protection but that also means paying that bit extra.
However it is always more sensible to buy a tent that provides you the maximum SPF protection because you are outdoors for several days and need the best safety measures for your skin. When you purchase a tent try to look for one which is made out of a really good fabric; this will ensure that you are safe from those harsh sun rays as the sun will not be able to penetrate the tents fabric.
While your tent takes care of you, it is also required that you take equally good care of it. To ensure that it lasts longer after beating the extreme heat and heavy rainfall, you must take care that it is stored properly without too many bends and folds. The folds of the tent will clearly show the wear and tear of the tents fabric; this will show you whether it has been cared for or not. So make sure it protects you as much as you protect it.

Each summer lots of people do like something interesting: camping. This is a great activity to be done with friends, family and relatives. It can be done on a single day or even the whole summer period. Since my childhood, I have been an avid camper. I started then going on some trips with my parents and years later with my friends.
I am practicing camping with my whole family or either by myself. The weekends days are usually spend outside the city, doing camping. My family and I knows a nice place 2 hours distant from the city. My children like this place a lot. Enjoying nature and good air is very important.
The equipment used in camping is very important. During that escape, you should carefully select what you will bring with you. Don’t forget things for the kitchen and of course the North Face Vario 23 tent. Bringing two of them is the right thing to do for the whole family. One tent for the children and the other one for myself and my wife. This tent has very good water resistance and is lightweight. Do not forget to pack another fishing pole in case you will go fishing and your main one will get broken.
Camping is a great experience in family. My kids love to take walks, to run around and a lot more. For myself, it is the best way to get rid of the weekly stress. For those rainy days, we found out a camping park where rustic cabins are available. For us, it is the perfect spot. So even during sunny weekends or during rainy ones, my family and I did find a great escape.
A last thing to mention is how important health is during those trips. Any campers should always pack an emergency kit for those long days. Think you might be some hours away from the nearest hospital and obviously you do need to be prepared for anything.

Tents are commonly used by campers. They are practical as they are portable. They hardly impact the environment which is necessary when one camps in the wilderness. There are different kinds of tents available according to the climate. There is the one-season tent used in summer. This tent can withstand light summer rains. The three-season tent can withstand heavy rains and light snow. This can be used in spring, summer and autumn. The three-season tents can offer you ventilation and protection from insects, moderate rain and wind. But they will not be able to withstand heavy snow.
The winter snow can be withstood by the four seasoned tent. The disadvantage is that the poor ventilation to keep out the cold in winter is not suited for summer as it gets too hot and uncomfortable inside the tent. This tent is heavier than other tents. You can unzip a roof panel or a pole section can be removed to convert the four season tent to a three season tent. The expedition tent is best suited for severe climatic conditions such as heavy snow, strong winds or heavy rains.
The number of persons going for camping will primarily determine the tent size. The season when you intend to go for camping also will be important. Separate sleeping areas are available in the bigger tents with partitions. There are tents for the rough mountains which have adjustable air vents, sealed seams, strong high performance waterproof canopy and reinforced pole clips. Such a tent is the Marmot Alpinist 2p Tent.
Tents come in different colors. Most often the color of the tent is low visibility colors such as brown, tan or green. There are also bright colored tents for easy visibility. This helps in their easy identification from air in case they are lost and there is an aerial search on. It also helps those who have wandered away and got lost. The bright colors will help in easily identifying the tent from far. These tents are available in stores that sell camping equipments. The tents can be set up easily and quickly. Clips and sleeves are used to connect the tent canopy to the poles. The poles are usually made of aluminum. They are also light weight. Coated fabric and nylon are the common material used as the fabric for the canopy.

Or it may be an open hut or an open space that allows the chilly wind to sweep down. The floor could be wooden and warm, or cold as cement.
The synthetic bag offers good insulation. The insulation also lasts longer. The down bags offer more warmth than the synthetic fill ones and are best suited for winter. These are also lighter. The down bags are good for taking along on a long expedition. But if the weather is wet, the down fill bags lose their insulation. You must take good care of the down filled bags so that they are not damaged even though they are more durable and long lasting. The synthetic bags are less expensive.
