Cooking Outdoors Is More Popular Then Ever
Posted by admin
The latest thing in home improvement these days seem to be many families taking traditional indoor activities and moving them outdoors. The growing popularity of outdoor kitchens is just one example. With people adding outdoor living spaces more and more, the most popular addition by far has been the outdoor kitchen.
RV people and campers have been doing this for years. If you have ever cooked over an open fire then you know that food just seems to taste better when prepared and eaten outdoors. It does not get any better than the smell of hot coffee, eggs and bacon frying in the morning. As a former Boy Scout, it was even better when a few ashes got in the food. I’m just saying. However, many have never experienced the joy of preparing and eating an outdoor feast with or with out the ashes of an open fire.
Well the folks at Keystone RVs have gone one better by offering an option of a complete outdoor kitchen on many of their travel trailer and fifth wheel models. Keystone calls this “The Tailgator Package.”.” What makes this feature so neat is it has a complete kitchen including a sink with hot and cold running water, a refrigerator and two-burner cook top. With solid surface countertops for easy preparation and cleaning, there are also large drawers and plenty of built-in cabinets. The cook top swings out to the side with an LP gas connection that plugs directly into the trailers LP system for ease of use. The refrigerator is large enough to accommodate all your cold storage food as well any beverages you care to include. Food prep is easy and efficient as cooking at home with this simple system.
You may be thinking that if it is raining and outdoor kitchen is useless. Well, Keystone has got you covered there too, literally. Each Tailgator Package packs up neat and tight and is enclosed with an exterior door that is raised and lowered by hydraulic supports. That means that not only will you be able to stabilize the door when it is open in the wind but will also keep the rain off while you are cooking. There is plenty of room under the shelter of the door for two or more people to stand and prepare food so no one will feel crowded. This is just one of the great features you will find even in the lesser priced Keystone RV models.
The reason Keystone goes to such lengths for the regular RV enthusiast is their desire to make camping as easy as possible for everyone to enjoy. This is one of the main reasons why Keystone RV is the number one selling RV in the country. Check one out at your local Keystone RV dealer today. You will like what you see.
3 Tips for a Great Camping Trip
Posted by admin
When someone buys a travel trailer, especially for the first time, they cannot wait to go on their first excursion into the outdoors. The excitement builds as they make campground reservations and plan to spend time enjoying nature or relaxing in a hammock by the fire. A good RVer is prepared for whatever problems that may arise as problems always do. This article will share 3 simple things that if not taken into consideration will totally ruin any trip you take.
When planning a trip in your camper trailer the obvious things are easy to prepare for. Where you are going to camp, what you are going to eat etc. However, when planning a trip, 3 issues are often overlooked in the excitement of preparing for the trip.
#1: Check The Wheels and Tires
The wheels and tires are the biggest item forgotten about until one goes flat. If you are stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire and without the proper tools or with a flat spare, it will ruin your day. Before you leave, check your tires. If you see little hairline cracks in the sidewalls, this is an indication of dry rot. This happens to all tires eventually. Replace worn tires and make sure the tire pressure is up to manufacturer’s specs. This is so simple yet it is the biggest issue faced on the road because it is overlooked by so many people.
#2 Check Your Axels
Then make sure your axels are lubricated. This is easy to do especially since so many newer models have easy lube axels that don’t even require loosening of a lug nut. Just use a grease gun to lubricate your axels before each trip. If you don’t know how, find a mechanic or and RV tech and have them do it for you. It is so much cheaper to have that done before your trip than to try to replace burned bearings by the side of the road.
#3: Test The Batteries and Charging System
This is another area so often overlooked until there is a problem. Simply checking your batteries before you leave is the easiest way to avoid this issue. Your travel trailer comes with deep cycle marine batteries. That means that the battery can be totally drained of power and when recharged will come back to full strength. Automotive batteries when drained will never return to full strength. Check your batteries before you leave to make sure they will take the proper charge. To ensure your power converter is working properly in your travel trailer, get it checked as well. Travel Trailers are wired for direct current (DC). They are designed to be operated by battery power. Your power converter will convert the direct current to alternating current (AC), or regular household electricity, that campgrounds are wired with. When plugged in to the shore power at the campsite it recharges your batteries. If your power converter isn’t working properly, you batteries will be drained quickly, the air conditioner will not work and you are in for a bad experience.
I know these such simple issues that anyone should know and do on a regular basis. The overwhelming majority of [issues. These are so simple to check and fix before you leave. Do not let simple issues like these ruin a great time with your family.

Take Your Family Camping This Year

Many of my best memories of our family camping trips involved sitting around the campfire at night. In fact, the minute we pulled into the campground, dad would begin to set up the family camping tents and I’d head into the forest looking for wood for the fire. I’d always bring back so much firewood that there would be no chance of burning it all but the “hunt” was a lot of fun for me. Then it was my job to build the campfire. I can remember bragging to my family that I could light a fire with only one match and no paper or fuel. Today it’s probably easier to buy your firewood but there’s still nothing like sitting around the fire.
Sitting around the campfire is one of those things that bring people together. Start a fire and most likely the people in the RV next to you will stop by with some marshmallows to toast. My sister used to toast them slowly and make them brown on the outside and warm and gooey on the inside and she always cooked them on one of our bbq tools. I used to put mine on the tip of a stick and burn them to a crisp right in the hottest part of the fire. We met a family on a camping trip in Canada in the late sixties and mom and dad are still close friends with them today.
A campfire will be a great idea for your family’s camping trip too. Once the marshmallows start toasting and mom brings out the hot chocolate, somebody may start telling stories. I used to like the ones that started out sounding like they were going to be scary but then the punch lines made them funny. You will also sing silly songs and tell jokes that really aren’t very funny. What your kids will love the most is that the whole family will be together and the they will have mom and dad all to themselves.
The more I think about those great days, the more I suggest that you pack your camping gear; and picnic accessories and take your family on a camping trip. You’ll have a fantastic vacation and create memories that will last a lifetime. I know mine have.
Have Fun this Summer - Go Camping

Welcome to my series on the joys of family camping. In this series I’ll remember my own camping experiences to help you understand why I think that camping is a terrific family experience. My family discovered camping when I was a young teen and in the 39 years that followed, I’ve had some great family experiences while camping. In the process, I’ll turn you on to some great places to camp and help you make a list of the camping gear you’ll need.
One of my favorite parts of a family camping trip is the chance to experience wildlife in a totally new way. The earliest example of this in my life was on our very first family camping trip. It was June of 1969 and my father decided that we would try camping for that summer’s vacation. Dad decided we were going to visit Ocean City, Maryland and see the wild ponies at Assateague Island National Seashore. Imagine how neat it was for my sister, brother and I (aged 4, 10 and 13 respectively) to see those ponies running around wild. Sure, we could have stayed at a hotel and driven to see the ponies, but it just wouldn’t have been the same as getting up, getting out of our camping tent, packing our picnic basket and then walking to where we could check out the ponies. It felt to me like we were part of the ponies’ environment rather than intruders into their world.
Among the spectacular wildlife I’ve seen while camping are wild moose in Maine, an amazing monarch butterfly migration in Long Island (yes you really can go camping in Long Island), dozens of bald eagles and hawks in Central Pennsylvania, a migration of tiny frogs near Myrtle Beach and hundreds of deer in one evening on the Skyline Drive in Virginia. All of these trips have etched memories for a lifetime into my mind. I only wish that digital cameras were better when I was a kid. That reminds me, don’t forget to take your camera on your next camping trip and when you go, please, please take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints.
