How To Plan Your First Camping Trip

There are a few key things to remember if you’ve never been camping alone, yes, even if you’ve gone with your parents.

Although it may seem like it is frivolous, make sure to check all of your equipment and your tent first. In the yard, about a week before you leave, set up the tent in the back yard. This allows you to check that you have all the tent pegs, poles and ropes needed to put the tent up properly. Check for any holes or damage, especially in the floor and roof of the tent, and thatís where water will come in if it rains.

Make sure there is not a hole in the inflatable mattress if you are bringing one, whether you have an air mattress or not be sure to bring a sleeping bag and a pillow. Falling asleep on a full matress and waking up on the ground is not enjoyable. In case of a temperature drop at night, be sure to pack an extra blanket.

If you intend cooking at the campsite, remember that you need to take everything you will need to prepare a meal. It is a good idea to bring cutlery, one or two small pots and a grid to place on the fire in case of barbecuing. Bringing a small gas cooker will make it more conveinant to cook so you dont have to start a fire for every meal or cup  of coffee. Consider refilling the gas before you leave. You will also need cleaning materials to wash and dry the dishes.

Your non perishable foods should be tightly sealed and unopened to avoid all spills. Pack any condiments and spices you like, it is often forgotten. Put liquids into plastic bags to make sure they donít leak over dry goods, and try to pack all the food into one container that can serve as your pantry for the remainder of the trip. Keep perishable foodstuffs to a minimum, buying them as you need them, and pack the cooler just before leaving.

Toiletries are not provided, pack toilet paper, and consider bringing a few different sizes of bath plugs, incase one isnt provided. If the campsite has communal ablutions, take plastic thongs to wear in the bathroom. A basket or small bag can be quite useful for travelling to and from the ablutions and helps to avoid dropping your underwear in full view of the entire campsite.

Unless you are camping in a remote spot, most things can be done without until you can get to the local store to buy them. You will be able to relax and enjoy nature if you prepare for a well organized trip.
